Outsourcing: Series Overview (1 of 4)
This post will kick off a four part series focused on outsourcing labor in your internet business. The topic of labor is something I have seen many internet marketers express through their writing. Internet marketing initially starts out as a single-person operation for most people. However as operations grow, many internet marketers find themselves overwhelmed with work. The fantasy of the “work from home” environment can quickly become a repetitive cycle of 12-15 hour days. Outsourcing attempts to address this issue.
Resources are always limited in business. One of the basic principles of economic is dealing with scarce resources. The two major resources a business has to manage is money and time. Given the ROI potential of internet marketing, money usually isn’t a constraining factor for a successful operation. However, as people become more successful, time usually becomes a very limited resource. Individually we are all limited to the same amount of time in a day, week or month. There is absolutely no way of increasing an individual’s time without taking away from other important areas of life. Yes, we can work to make ourselves more efficient, but that will only go so far.
Employing staff is the only way to significantly increase your business’ time. If you are working 40 hours per week, hiring one employee will double your potential output. Conversely, if you are working 80 hours per week, hiring one employee will cut your workload in half. Employee’s add value to companies, and has the business owner it is your responsibility to dictate how that value is applies. Do you use their effort to dramatically increase your revenue? Or do you use their effort to reduce stress and make working in your business a much more enjoyable and sustainable experience?
There are some major issues to outsourcing labor, and it is not surprising that many entrepreneurs struggle in this growth phase. Each post in this series will address specific problems, with some suggestions to overcome them. The remaining posts will cover:
